Innsbruck-Tirol as a new highlight in the climbing World Cup calendar!

5 days, 4 disciplines, 3 World Cups, 1 European Cup

Only a few weeks before the Olympic premiere of the climbing sport in Tokyo, all four individual disciplines (Lead, Boulder, Speed and Paraclimbing) will be held for the first time at an IFSC event outside of a world championship within the framework of the 1st IFSC AUSTRIA CLIMBING OPEN. Four international competitions (men's and women's) will take place over five days at the spectacular outdoor facility of the Innsbruck Climbing Centre. Three of them (Paraclimbing, Lead, Boulder) as World Cup and Speed as European Cup.

Bouldering World Cup and Lead World Cup at the same venue for the first time

The organisers of the IFSC AUSTRIA CLIMBING OPEN (Climbing Federation Austria in cooperation with the Austrian Alpine Club) have scored a special coup by having a venue host both the Bouldering World Cup AND the Lead World Cup opener at the same time for the first time in the 32-year history of the Climbing World Cup.

IFSC AUSTRIA CLIMBING OPEN as the last yardstick before the Olympic Games

Both the event date and the selection of top-class competitions in the three individual disciplines Lead, Boulder and Speed offer the Olympic participants, about five weeks before the Olympic premiere of the climbing sport, optimal conditions for a last, extensive form test.

For the athletes, the competitions in Innsbruck are a season highlight alongside the Olympic Games in Tokyo and the World Championships in Moscow. "The anticipation for the home World Cup in Innsbruck is huge - and for several reasons that are important for me this season. It will be one of the few World Cups, a certainly very strong position determination in lead climbing, a form test for the Olympic Games and then also with home advantage. You can't get much more than that - and even though the setting will be a little different, memories of the 2018 World Cup at home will inevitably come up," says Jakob Schubert, who won two of his three World Cup gold medals in his hometown in 2018.

IFSC AUSTRIA CLIMBING OPEN as an inclusive event concept

A total of 500 athletes from more than 40 nations are expected at the first edition of the IFSC AUSTRIA CLIMBING OPEN. Among them are about 100 paraclimbers. "The paraclimbing competitions at the home World Championships 2018 fascinated and captivated the spectators. Climbing is an individual sport, yet the community experience is strong. That's why we have planned the Paraclimbing World Cup as a fixed, inclusive part of the event concept from the very beginning and, of course, put Paraclimbing on the same level as the other individual disciplines!" KVÖ Sports Director Heiko Wilhelm explains another novelty of the event format.
